Historical Notes

New York City.  The disturbance began after police raided the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village.  Frank Kameny (fired from U.S. civil service for being gay) organized gay rights protests in DC in the mid-60’s. The most notable was a protest at the White House in 1965. Kameny’s protest memorabilia are part of a gay history Smithsonian exhibit. Some people have argued that the gay rights movement in the United States started there/then…four years before the Stonewall Riots.
